WHAT CHANGED & WHY
A milestone in a story that has been building for years.
After prayerful reflection and approval of our board, Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School is now Cristo Rey Birmingham. This is not the beginning of a new story. It is a milestone in one that has been building for decades.
Our students today come from 31 zip codes across multiple counties — not just one neighborhood. The name Cristo Rey Birmingham reflects the full reach of who we are and connects us to a nationally recognized network of more than 40 schools that families, colleges, and employers already know and trust.
The Holy Family legacy is not being erased. It lives in the Holy Family Chapel now being created at the heart of the school, in every graduate who came before, and in the mission that has always defined this community.

SCHOOL HISTORY
A Tradition That Has Never Stopped

1940s: The Beginning
The Passionists — the Congregation of the Passion — come to Ensley and build Holy Family Hospital, Holy Family Catholic Church, and Holy Family School to serve Black families during segregation. Not as charity, as love.

1943: Holy Family High School
Holy Family Catholic High School is formally founded. For decades, it becomes a neighborhood institution — producing attorneys, physicians, educators, and community leaders from the west side of Birmingham.

2006-07: Joining the Cristo Rey Network
Facing financial crisis, the community rallies to save the school. Holy Family is selected as the first Cristo Rey school in the South, one of only three Cristo Rey conversion schools in the country to survive and thrive.

2019: A New Campus
The school moves to a larger campus in Titusville, expanding access to students across the Birmingham metro area while the Holy Family legacy in Ensley — the parish and Holy Family Catholic Academy — continues.

2026: Cristo Rey Birmingham
A new name. A new chapter. The school now serves students from 31 zip codes across multiple counties. For three consecutive years, 100% of seniors have been accepted to college. The school is stronger than it has ever been.
PRESERVING THE LEGACY
The Holy Family Name Lives On
As part of the school's upcoming renovations, Cristo Rey Birmingham is creating a Holy Family Chapel — a permanent, central space inside the school that honors where we came from and ensure that the Holy Family mission and legacy remain at the heart of everything we do.
The chapel will be open to students, families, alumni, and friends as a place of prayer, reflection, and remembrance of the community that made this school what it is.
The Passionists of Holy Cross Province continue to serve as spiritual endorsers of Cristo Rey Birmingham and remain active at Holy Family Parish and Holy Family Catholic Academy in Ensley.

COMMON QUESTIONS
What You Need to Know
Why is the name changing?
Our students today come from 31 zip codes across multiple counties. "Cristo Rey Birmingham" reflects the full reach of who we are and connects us to a nationally recognized network of more than 40 schools that families, colleges, and employers already know and trust. The name is simply catching up to the school.
Is this the end of the Holy Family name?
No. The Holy Family name lives on in the Holy Family Chapel being created inside Cristo Rey Birmingham, in every graduate who came before, and in the Ensley community, where Holy Family Parish and Holy Family Catholic Academy continue to serve families under that name.
The Passionists, who founded Holy Family in the 1940s, remain the religious endorsers of the school. Their presence and mission have not changed.
What is actually changing for current students and families?
The name. Everything else stays the same — your student's teachers, their Corporate Work Study placement, the close community you chose, our Catholic identity open to students of all faiths, and our commitment that every graduate leaves college-ready and prepared for what comes next.
Student email address will be updated with advance notice. Transcripts issued going forward will carry the new name; transcripts already issued remain valid. Both HFCR and CRBHM branded uniform shirts will be acceptable through at least the 2026-2027 school year.
Is the school still Catholic?
Yes. Cristo Rey Birmingham is a Catholic high school rooted in Catholic Social Teaching and endorsed by the Passionists of Holy Cross Province. We welcome students of all faith backgrounds.
What is the Cristo Rey Network?
The Cristo Rey Network is the only high school network in the United States that integrates four years of rigorous academics with four years of professional work experience through a Corporate Work Study Program. Across 24 states, 41 Cristo Rey schools serve more than 12,000 students. Our school has been part of this network since 2007 — and is one of only three Cristo Rey conversion schools in the country to survive and thrive.
